Apple's Voice Memos can't attach a photo to a recording. If you want a voice note and a picture in one place, you have two good options on an iPhone: Apple Notes, which can hold an audio recording and photos in the same note, or a voice journal like Nuro, where you tap the camera while you're talking and the photos attach to that entry.
Why bother keeping them together?
Because the photo is usually the thing your voice note is about, and apart they make no sense.
- "The paint is this one, but in the eggshell finish." (Which one?)
- "Copy what's on this whiteboard into the plan." (Which whiteboard?)
- "Return this before the 30th." (Return what?)
A month later you'll find either a recording that points at nothing or a photo with no explanation.
Option 1: Apple Notes
On iOS 18 and later, Notes can record audio inside a note. Tap the attachment button, choose Record Audio, and on supported iPhones you can see a transcript. The same attachment button adds photos, so the recording and the picture can live in one note.
It's a solid choice if you already keep everything in Notes. It doesn't do anything with what you said, though: no to-dos, no dates, no reminders.
Option 2: photos inside a Nuro recording
In Nuro 3.0.9, there's a camera button on the recording screen. While you talk:
- Tap the camera to take a photo, or choose one from your library.
- Keep talking. The recording doesn't stop.
- Add up to five photos per recording.
When you stop, the photos attach to the entry. Nuro's Take, the short reply Nuro writes under each entry, can see them, so "this one, in eggshell" has something to refer to. You can also add photos to an entry afterwards from the entry screen.
Photos never hold up the recording. If you're offline or the upload is slow, the entry saves as normal and the photos follow when they can.
When typing is better than talking
Talking isn't always possible: a quiet office, a sleeping partner, a train. Nuro has two ways to type:
- Hold the record button to go straight to the typing screen.
- Already talking? Tap Type instead. The words Nuro heard so far carry over into the text box, so you pick up where you left off.
One honest detail: when you switch, the audio itself isn't kept, because you're now editing the words. If you've been talking for more than 15 seconds, Nuro asks before switching and tells you how much audio will go.
Typed entries are treated like spoken ones: to-dos, dates and search all work the same.
Which should you use?
| You want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Keep a recording and a photo side by side, nothing more | Apple Notes |
| Have the photo and words turn into to-dos and reminders | Nuro, camera while recording |
| Capture a thought where you can't talk | Nuro, hold to type |
| Record something long, like a lecture or meeting | Voice Memos or a dedicated recorder |
Frequently asked questions
Can you add a picture to a voice memo on iPhone?
Not in Voice Memos. Apple Notes can hold an audio recording and photos in the same note, and Nuro attaches photos you take while recording to the entry.
How many photos can I add to a Nuro entry?
Up to five.
Does Nuro keep the audio if I switch to typing?
No. The words carry over and the audio isn't kept. After 15 seconds of talking, Nuro asks first. More on the photos and typing page.
Does Nuro's Take look at my photos?
Yes. Photos attached to an entry are part of what the Take reads.
